1st Annual Blaine County
Lambing and Calving Open House
The Chinook Area Chamber of Commerce and the North Central Montana Cattlewomen are proud to sponsor the 1st Annual Blaine County Lambing and Calving Tour. Grandma and Grandpa, Mom and Dad, gather up some warm clothes, bundle up the kids and come out in the country and witness Blaine County’s biggest annual event - lambing and calving.
In an effort to help their city cousins better understand agriculture and to have the opportunity to see the start of new life; some Blaine County farmers and ranchers are inviting everyone to view their lambing and calving operations. There will be lots of baby lambs and calves to see and if your timing is lucky, you may get to see one born.
The open house is sponsored by the Chinook Area Chamber of Commerce and the North Central Montana Cattlewomen. The open house will start the weekend of February 27 and 28th and the final weekend will be April 23 and 24th. In order to accommodate everyones schedule the tours will only run on weekends. Area ranchers are urged to sign up a weekend that would be convenient for them to show the baby lambs or calves to participants. Ranchers that are interested in participating in the open house are urged to contact the Blaine County Extension Office, 357-3200; Paulette Keller, 357-3625 or Larry Nissen, 357-3534 to schedule their weekend. There will be several stops on each weekend but participants are not obligated to go to all. However, if you wish to visit a ranch, you should call the night before to get directions, check on the road conditions and to let the rancher know what time you will be at his place. This is a low key open house; participants get to pick the place they would like to view from the open house schedule. Ranchers get to pick the weekend they would like to show people around.
Safety is always a concern when ewes are lambing and cows are calving. We ask participants to be calm and cool - meet up with the rancher and they will show you around the ranch. It might even be in the old feed truck that doesn’t have a heater.
